Julia Ciunowicz

Textile artist and researcher based in Warsaw, Poland working on the border between practice and theory of socially and ecologically engaged art. Member of the texpol group.

Through working with plant fibres, raw wool, natural dyes and organic matter, she investigates relationships between humans, plants, landscapes and the histories of labour embedded in materials. Her practice focuses on researching fibre plants, natural materials and forgotten craft techniques. By collecting and processing plants into fibres, yarns and woven structures, she explores how vegetation, soil conditions and locally available resources historically shaped everyday life, craft traditions and community economies. She is particularly interested in embodied knowledge preserved in craft practices - forms of knowledge often marginalized by industrial production.

Her works take the form of textile sculptures, spatial installations and participatory projects. In many of them material functions as a medium of memory, recording landscapes, industrial transformations and more-than-human relations

She works with fabrics and fibers, creating a natural dyeing and basketry studio - Dzikie sploty.
