Julia Ciunowicz

Textile artist and researcher based in Warsaw, Poland working on the border between practice and theory of socially and ecologically engaged art. Member of the texpol group.

In her artistic practice she deconstructs historical textile, fiber and basketry practices to rethink their meaning in today's world.  She refers to various moments in the history of textiles, while placing traditionally inherited techniques in new contexts.  The effects of her research are visual objects, installations, meetings and socially engaged activities.

On a daily basis, she works with fabrics and fibers, creating a natural dyeing and basketry studio - Dzikie sploty. Together with the Post-Artistic Services Office, she conducts artistic research with the local community of the healing town near the coal mine - Opolno-Zdrój, and together with Maja Janczar and Anna Ptak, she examines the history of the textile industry and gender inequalities of the political transformation in Lower Silesia.
